Gonzales, LA. River Region Art Association held a reception on May 4 at the association’s Depot Gallery for “Painting with Yarn”, a retrospective exhibition of work by Virginia Knight. Attending the reception were members of the Knight family, including her son Tim Knight and his wife Damien, from New Orleans.
Ms. Knight, along with Diane Tygier, operated the Tygier Knight Galleries at various locations in the French Quarter for 35 years. The last location was at 313 Royal Street. The two ladies met early in their careers while both were painters selling their work on the fence at Jackson Square in New Orleans. There they discovered a mutual love of the arts and became not only business partners, but life-long friends. During the last 20 years of her life, Ms. Knight created hundreds of intricate yarn paintings, rugs, and purses. Many are on display in the exhibit. Ms. Knight passed away in 2013.
Ms. Tygier, a resident of Gonzales for eight years, is gallery chair of the RRAA Depot Gallery in Gonzales, LA and the River Region Art Gallery in the Houmas House Plantation Gift Shop in Darrow, LA. She continues to paint and exhibit her work.
The “Painting with Yarn” exhibition will run until May 31. The RRAA Depot Gallery is located at 1008 W. Hwy 30, which is across the highway from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
